CTE Course Descriptions

CTE (Career and Technology Education)

All of the courses in the CTE department at Walker Junior High School are aligned to the California state standards in Career Technology Education and the Common Core. Students focus on the four Cs-Communication, Critical Thinking, Creativity, and Collaboration.

STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) Academy: Students will have the opportunity to learn about a variety of STEAM oriented topics such as computer programming (we’re going to try and make a video game), microcontrollers/electronics (and then attempt a robot), and may also include aeronautics (finally designing, building and hopefully flying model aircraft). This is a course for the eighth graders.

Eighth grade Woodshop: Over the course of the semester, students will be introduced to many areas of woodworking and project based learning.  Through the use of textbooks, demonstrations, and visual aids, students will learn the techniques of project planning, hand tool usage, some machine tools, and various finishing techniques. Students will also be encouraged to utilize the skills learned in the 7th grade to move into areas of designing projects that are both challenging and rewarding.

7th grade woodshop: During this hands-on, project based introduction to woodshop, students learn about workshop and general safety, various hand and machine tools.  Students will learn about the process of design and basic engineering within the media of wood and will design and build their very own wood based project.
